Hi, I'm Karl Alexander. I am a BACP registered Psychotherapeutic Counsellor based in Teesside.

You've probably come across my website because you're going through a difficult time right now. I would love the opportunity to be the person to support you in your journey to create the lasting changes you hope for in order to improve your life.

Maybe your relationship is stalling or your job is making you anxious. You might find yourself replaying situations or events from the past, and not able to move forward. Your life might feel pointless, your relationships may feel unfulfilling. Maybe you find yourself comparing yourself to friends or colleagues and feel like you are a failure. Maybe you consider yourself unimportant and feel unvalued or have low self-esteem but you just don't know how to become a more confident person. You might be struggling with your gender or sexuality and this confusion over your identity is impacting on your life. Perhaps you're struggling with the loss of a loved one and can't seem to get through the pain of the grief and would like someone to talk to, to help you move on in a healthier way without forgetting the person you've lost.

I offer confidential face-to-face counselling to adults from my therapy room based in central Middlesbrough that focuses on overcoming depression, low-mood, anxiety, grief and dissatisfaction by understanding the root causes, transforming low self-esteem, confidence and self-worth as well as exploring problematic and unhelpful life patterns and habits.

How I work

In order to help you to meet your goals I need to understand what it's like to be you, to understand how you think, feel and how you see yourself. To do this I'll warmly welcome you in to a friendly, comfortable and safe space where I can ask you some questions about you and your life.

In my practice I use tools from my training as an integrative practitioner, with Transactional Analysis being my core model alongside other person-centred and creative approaches to figure out a way of working that is best suited to you, who you are and what you bring to the session.

If reading this you feel like I might be the right counsellor for you and you are interested in the way I work and would like to find out if this way suits you, the next step is to email me to organise a free initial phone call or book a half price initial face-to-face session.

this will then give us the opportunity to meet, test the waters and explore any questions you might have. there is no obligation to enter into therapy with me; you are welcome to use this as an opportunity to work out what you want and need.

I look forward to hearing from you.

My training

I am a fully qualified and BACP registered psychotherapeutic counsellor. I trained at the Northern Guild for psychotherapy, which is one of the leading training institutes in the region.

I am a person-centred therapist who will tune in to you and your story to understand how you feel and determine what it is you need from therapy in order to achieve your goals.

As I previously stated my core training is in Transactional Analysis and this forms the theoretical framework for the therapy that I offer. I integrate this theory with ideas and tools from the person-centred, creative, developmental and attachment based approaches such as; Gestalt Therapy, Erikson's Developmental Theory and Attachment Theory.

I offer both short and longer term therapy and most of my experience has been gained working in NHS settings as well as private counselling services with people over a number of weeks, months or years to really understand the root of their problems, so as to create lasting, positive transformations.

I enjoy allowing for the process to develop naturally and in a way that reflects the individual. With me, you will be allowed the freedom to truly follow your own process; discovering your authentic self and implementing the changes that you seek at your own pace and in your own way, which really is the key to true, long lasting healing.

If you'd like to explore working with me further, I recommend we start by speaking over the phone or if you prefer, meeting for an initial consultation session. You can arrange these by emailing me here or using the email me button.

Growing up gay I felt misunderstood (I didn’t even understand myself) and quite alone without much support. I suffered a lot of bullying and struggled with depression and anxiety, and at my lowest point I even attempted to take my own life.

I initially turned to the support of the Samaritans, a free life-saving telephone service. Who gave me the space to explore my own feelings without fear of judgement which made a huge difference to me. I’d never been given that space or time before, for the first time in my life I felt someone cared about me and it had a huge impact on me.

After my initial experience with Samaritans I knew I needed more support. I wanted to explore why I was feeling so low and find out ways of coping and getting through this difficult time.

I turned to counselling and I was overwhelmed by the benefits of this process and found that it had such a huge impact on my quality of life that I wanted to share it with others by training to be a Psychotherapist myself.

I didn’t know where to start in becoming a counsellor myself, I initially started volunteering as a ‘Listener’ for Samaritans - I wanted to be the person on the other end of the phone that was there for me at my lowest point, for other people struggling to cope.

I was working in retail, I was unfulfilled and realising this wasn’t the right path for me and I enrolled at the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy and Counselling.

I am a qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor registered with the BACP and a Trainee Member of the UKCP. I am currently continuing my training with the Northern Guild to gain UKCP accreditation.

“Growth occurs when individuals confront problems, struggle to master them, and through that struggle develop new aspects of their skills, capacities, views about life.”

Counselling with me is tailored to you and your needs. My goal is to find an arrangement that works for you. This includes considering things like your availability, time-frames for therapy as well as frequency of our sessions.

I offer short-term, solution-focussed therapy (6-8 sessions) as well as in-depth therapy over a longer period of time, to suit your situation, circumstances and preferences.

During our first session, these are the kinds of factors we'll be able to discuss, consider and plan around so that you feel in control of the process and it works for you.
